Move-in without living out of boxes

Life Changes · 5 min read

The boxes still stacked in the spare room six months later were packed without a plan. Unpacking is decided before the truck arrives.

Move-in without living out of boxes

Pack by destination, not by origin

Label every box with the room it is going to in the new house, not the room it came from. Add a one-line contents note. That single habit cuts unpacking time roughly in half.

Declutter before you pay to move it

Movers charge by weight or volume. Every box you cull before moving day is money back, and it is far easier to decide in a familiar space.

Unpack in this order

  • First-night box: bedding, medications, chargers, toiletries, coffee.
  • Beds and bathrooms.
  • Kitchen essentials — one shelf of dishes, not the whole box.
  • Closets and dressers.
  • Living spaces.
  • Garage, basement and storage last.

Label by destination, cull before the truck, and unpack rooms in order of sleep and hygiene.
